Probably nothing.. So check with Tarek.... He's in charge with distutils.. not me. The very one person that has the authority to actually *fix* the problem is complaining about the problem. If he can't do anything about it - there's certainly no hope for anybody else. It just seems that if it isn't a plone/zope problem, then it won't be looked at or even considered. I would have thought that improving setup.py, as Tarek himself pointed out.. would have been something that he could do. What's happened here, is that all the political baggage of of setuptools (management style) has also been forked...... it would seem... No changes for 9 months... hmmmm.... setup.py has stayed the same for way... way... longer than that...
