Finally somebody had few doubts about CPAN...please have a look ti a "just-posted" article on slashdot.
That mess is CPAN was my original reason to discard perl in first (and switching to python): no two installed perl are ever the same. No way to reliably reproduce the same environment and no auditing possible: and this is a requirement in a professional environment. I was (and I'm still) happy the way distutils works: it might be enhanched but it's right in the scope (creating an installer). The way the software is indexed, managed, have the deps tracked and retrieved should not be in that scope: it is a job for something else (a tool).
