I have a couple tweaks which makes distutils more functional for the mscv family. Namely exposing the compiler/link flags that are necessary for linking against Python without dependence on the full msvc import being successful. There are a bunch of hack-arounds oribiting this problem, and I would be willing to do some work to smooth it over.
