To elaborate a little further on that, install time scripts are one of the main motivators for "required extensions" in PEP 426 - it means that deciding on an install hook design can be postponed until *after* the initial metadata 2.0 definition, so there's an opportunity to experiment with different approaches before blessing one as the official way of requesting them.
