If you don't isolate your sources from the import paths then you're probably testing the wrong way. In other words, you're probably not testing the installed code. Very few test runners change the current working directory by default [1], so it's better to just get a better project layout. pyca/cryptography <https://github.com/pyca/cryptography> is a good example. [1] trial is the only one that I know of, and it's hardly popular for testing anything but projects that use Twisted.
