Pippin, that's not entirely correct. HDMI supports all sample rates fine (in fact at least up to 192 kHz). If I use UPnP/DLNA on my Blu-Ray player connected over HDMI, all sample rates (44.1, 48, 96) are passed thru fine. So, the issue is stricted to iOS deciding itself it wants to resample.
