Did you try the VU screensaver; how does that look / work? I'm using 'jstraws custom VU's' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?77117-Analogue-digital-VU&p=534824&viewfull=1#post534824) on my Touch and they look awesome. Wonder how these would do on the pi display.
