If you are terribly interested in multiple auth backends, check out http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/MultipleAuthBackends It's pretty abstract, but it WILL take care of the use case where you want people to log in with an email address. (That's for brian if he's still hanging around in django-land) ;-) It should work for OpenId as well.
