You didn't get an answer to this, but it has been asked here before. The reason it's part of the core translations is because not every language on the planet uses the Roman alphabet. Think about Russian, Armenian, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, ... What I'm intending to do, probably before 1.0, is split out the localflavor bits into their own file and make the English PO file map the source string to the itself (rather than leaving it blank). Then locales who do use the same alphabet can just copy the English version and be done with it and we'll be able to generate better statistics.
