Malcolm is the i18n genius so we'll leave that to him (there are some other issues with Date/Time stuff). > We'd also like to try to make a start translating the tutorials and > some other explanatory texts -- basically anything where there is > going to be a big win fairly quickly for people. With the documentation refactor Jacob setup the basis for translating documentation, so *maybe* in a near future there's a "standard" way for doing this, right now you can either write pages on the Wiki ( code.djangoproject.com) or build your own site with translated documentation. > I kind of assuming that for the text that Django uses we'd be starting > off with an English file were we over time replace the English with > Thai. Is this the basis of the procedure? You create a ".po" file wich contains all the sentences meant to be translated, and translate them. Gettext takes care then of replacing the english strings by your own (they do not necesarily need to be in English, but in Django they are, as it's the base language). The Django documentation, in the contributing document explains how to create the .po file, and how to submit it http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/internals/contributing/#submitting-and-maintaining-translations, the i18n doc explains how things work: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/topics/i18n/#topics-i18n So, translating Django to any language is fairly straight forward (just translating a bunch of sentences in a text file). For the tools, you can use a simple text editor (with UTF-8 support) or specialized tools, or editors with plugins. Like Vim+po, KBabel, poedit, ... The Django Wiki has a page with tools listed: http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/Localization#Tools Hope this helps, Marc -- http://www.marcfargas.com - will be finished someday. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Django I18N" group.
