It took me on the order of magnitude of one week of work to come up with
the patch discussed here in order to maximize backwards compatibility —
most likely because I'm a poor developer. Regardless I didn't try to cut
corners and this was certainly not "easy for me". I'm sorry it didn't work
for you.
