 Refs #32956 -- Changed "afterwards" to "afterward" in docs and comments.

 This also removes unnecessary comments with the previous spelling.

 AP Stylebook has a short entry to advise the preferred spelling for
 "en-us". "Afterwards" is preferred in British English.
