 It could be me, but I don't feel comfortable with having to modify:

  * Code of the MySQL backend
  * An utility function that is used by other two DB backends

 just to workaround problems in a contrib app (admin) feature
 (`date_hierarchy`), especially when the origin is bad data poorly handled
 by MySQL.
