Another elegant solution woud be:

def __init__(self, *args, **kwargs):
super(MyImageField, self).__init__(*args, **kwargs)
def clean(self, *args, **kwargs):
data = super(MyImageField, self).clean(*args, **kwargs)
data.name = data.name.encode('ascii','ignore')
return data
}}}
