Dear Anand Frederico Caceres' app [1,2] is worth a look, but note that it uses old-style repeated polling of the server.
Alex Clemesha has written an exciting piece on developing real-time web apps with Django, Orbited and Twisted [3]. His demo application, hotdot [4], includes a real-time chat application. His blog also mentions Speeqe [5], which is a chat application integrating Django and ejabberd, the erlang xmpp server. Let us know how you get on.
