I was able to fix the issue using the TEST_MIRROR database setting (http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.2/topics/testing/#testing-master- slave-configurations). While this relationship isn't exactly master- slave in our situation, the datastore connection is indeed read-only. Using this setting allowed me to run the unit tests successfully.
