Are you using the default version of Python that came with Snow Leopard? If so, try a virtualenv. I did some searching on Google and saw similar errors reported but it seems that bugs which would cause them have been patched in current versions.
I do all my development in virtualenvs with official download versions of Python from python.org and I've never had this problem, and I do use iPython.
