I think I have a solution. It's not great but it will have to do while I stay with Dreamhost (or until Dreamhost has formal Django support). Apache answers the requests, passes them on to lighttpd running on a different port which then talks to fcgi. This gives me full control over the whole web server. I can kill it if I need to etc. Apache never talks to fcgi.
