I figured out a way around it:

def benefits_sql(schema):
        from django.db import connection
        cursor = connection.cursor()
        sql = "select * from %s.benefits" %(schema)
        cursor.execute(sql, [])
        benefits = cursor.fetchall()
        return benefits
