Hmmm,

Several manufacturers, including Dell, are offering XP again. XP is to
windows as democracy is to government, very bad, but all other forms are
so much worse.

Different "flavors" of Vista have different levels of security, so it is
not surprising tht you are having a problem and someone else with Vista is
not.

Having a laptop with Vista can be annoying and embarrassing (suppose you
are showing a businessman some spreadsheeets for your new startup, well
away from hotspots, and Vista decides it is time to verify). But if it is
not your choice, talk to the notebook manufacturer. Many of them are
offering XP very quietly. If you need to persuade yourself to make the
switch, try www.badvista.org to learn how thoroughly that OS invades your
privacy and 'protects' you from legitimate software while still being
wide-open to exploits. For example, I can install, but not run, Quanta
Gold on Vista, but SciTE (which does not use the registry), runs just
fine. Neither are on the approved software list back at Microsoft. Also
note that the "approved" list can be a weapon. Suppose some software
manufacturer "discovers" a security flaw in version 3.012 of his
accounting software and issues 3.013a for the modest fee of $29.95 and
withdraws approval from 3.012? Think you have recourse? Read the EULA
you agreed to.
