Thanks for the feedback everyone!

The deed is done and I've got myself set up with Ubuntu Desktop, MySQL
all working with Django, and gedit customised a la
http://grigio.org/pimp_my_gedit_was_textmate_linux to act a bit more
like Textmate. I'm liking it so far :)
