The above lines aren't quite right ``self.instance`` is an instance of
your ``SomeModel`` and presuming there is a foreign key to
``YourStateModel`` it should look something like this instead::

                ...
                if self.instance.state.name == 'processing':
                    queryset = queryset.exclude(name='new')
                ...
