That's the irony of the thing -- Aja[x|j] is actually easier to use, and more effective, for enhancing form-work in this way but it's not a first class citizen of web tech.
I had set out to *not* use Ajax this time round and now I find it coming back into the picture. Perhaps I should simply chuck the whole 'classic' website meme into the bin and never look back.
