Hrm... well, I'd argue that in a system which synchronizes database tables with in-memory objects, knowing you have to save an object before you can create a reference to it isn't really a subtlety. It's something you have to know, and best learned early on. Maybe not quite as early as that first page, but still early. Regardless of where it ends up, can it be documented in a reasonably prominent place? I couldn't find a simple statement of the fact anywhere in the reference docs, after a sincere effort at looking!
