85 Women and Children Taken in Slave Raids
----------------------
On Friday, just weeks after pledging to help the US
anti-terror campaign, Sudan's forces terrorized 12
south Sudanese villages - abducting 85 women and children
into slavery. Please e-mail and call (202-647-4440)
the State Dept. Africa desk. Urge Colin Powell to demand
the immediate liberation of these 85 women and children.

-------YOU MAY EDIT THE LETTER BELOW---------
I write to you in response to news from southern Sudan
that 85 women and children have been enslaved by Sudanese
government forces.
News of the slave raids - which ended on Friday - is
horrifying. Colin Powell must immediately condemn these
raids on civilian villages and demand the freedom of
all those enslaved.
According to civil authorities in Aweil County, Sudan,
militia raiders terrorized a dozen villages - killing
93 people, abducting 85 into slavery, and displacing
over 4,000.
These atrocities come on the heels of dramatically
improved relations between the US and Sudan. I understand
the need to put together a broad anti-terror coalition,
but Sudan is waging its own campaign of terror - a
self-proclaimed jihad - against civilians in south
Sudan.
We cannot stay silent in the wake of these raids. And
Sudan cannot view improved diplomatic relations with
the US as license to step up its campaign of genocide.
Secretary Powell and President Bush must condemn these
raids in no uncertain terms. And as long as Sudan terrorizes
its own population, it should have no role in an anti-terror
coalition.
-------END OF LETTER-------------------------
Sincerely yours,
Layce Holland
