I don't know if anyone has a definite answer for that one but I personally think it's the filters. Once you get a hold of one get an 808 kick sample, cut the attack off of it, change the gain about +10 or +20, run it through a high pass filter, assign filter cutoff to the mod wheel and you'll see what I'm talking about.
