A speaker cone is at an equilibrium when no electromotive force is acting on its magnet/voice coil. When there is DC offset, I believe it is effectively causing a constant EMF in one direction in addition to the alternating current (AC). The woofer is then in a constant "woof" or "reverse woof" stance. Pretty ineffective as a speaker then. This is only one problem caused by DC offset.
