Yo my last message was incorrect as it described the previous version of Logic. In 5O you just click automation (like the first choice) under View. It does a nice zoomout trick, then you can just choose what you want to automate, it's all labeled. then click on midi if you want to use a midi controller, or click on touch if you want to record with the mouse. those same options are available in the mixer, on top of the volume slider for each individual track, instrument, bus or master.
