the only thing that comes close only takes advantage of the fact that most
people record vocals panned dead center and everything else has different
panning.  so you can apply an effect that drops out the center channel and
only keeps the left and right (this is what just about any "vocal remover"
program/plugin/kareoke machine will do, and maybe do something with
inverting a channel to try and further cancel things out, like cooledit
pro's noise reduction).  but now since people are getting inventive with
backing vocals and harmonies panned all over the place, you end up getting
different results, which sometimes gets really cool effects, or uncovers
things you never heard before in songs.

sorry.  it's not really possible.  I believe there are programs,
plugins, fx, etc that try to do this, but I think they are just notch EQ
Filters, and as a result the music will be affected.  To write an
algorithm that can tell a voice apart from the rest of the song, and
remove only the voice's harmonics seems impossible to me.
