Personally, I would only compress the drums, bass and any vocals, which hadn 't previously been compressed (so I wouldn't compress sampled vocals) within a mix. Compression can be added afterwards when the final mix is being mastered, so there'd be no need to have compression on all 16 channels. But like most things, this is only a guideline, not a rule of thumb.
