What OS are you using? I know that in earlier Windows versions you couldn't share the native WAV device of your soundcard for multiple programs, so if one was using it, and crashed, you couldn't use it in any other program
WinXP solved this though, and on the other versions it ussually works if you select the MS DirectX sounddriver for your audio soft outputs.
