If you lift small sections from old vinyl or unusual recordings you can use them as instruments or phrases or whatever.. You just need to spend time editing them and forming them into something you want to use...

At the end of the day there are real acoustic instruments, synthetic instruments and combinations of both.. If you can make the synth sounds on VSTis and you can recreate the acoustic instruments using samples then in theory you can recreate pretty much any sound you want... It just takes time and patience..

Have a read of some of the synth documents in the Sound on Sound archive (I think the link was posted again recently).. Once you appreciate what sound "IS", then it becomes a lot easier to extract what you want from samples..

As far as the beats are concerned.. I used to just chop a break up in Recycle and use it in Dr.Rex in Reason.. (Just the same thing as using Wave surgeon and a sampler).. and then add individual drum samples over that... But now I load individual drum sounds into Cubase SX directly onto their own Audio channels and then manually edit them from there... (maybe throwing in breaks here and there for good measure)..

You can find plenty of good breaks on the web or on sample CDs or on old vinyl...

There are loads of good individual drum samples here : ftp://ftp.akaipro.co.jp/downloads/sound_libraries/

Just load up some sounds and then process them to f***.. If you've got a fast enough Pc and some nice plugins you can do it all in Cubase SX.. (I do anyway)..

lets be realistic..there are limitations. sure u can copy and paste, resample, pitch shift, reverse or invert but if ure sampling somebody elses music...itll sound too similar. if i wanna make a tune i need some samples that sound remotely close to whats in my head then edit them..

unless anybody has any other ideas.

nick didnt get what u sed bout ur beats..but sounds interesting. im using wavesurgeon to chop up beats..but i cant find many good ones to chop up.
