How much would that come to at the moment just out of interest - 1500 - 2000?

Cheers

Subject: [dnb-prod] RE: Making the Switch

Hi Dan,

The only hardware I have is a novation nova and I only bought that because I wanted a way of making nice sounds but I didn't have the money/access to a fast pc and all the software at the time..

I've always used a pc but it's only been in the last 6 months that my system has been fast enough to work in the way I wanna work.. I.e. to be able to do all the work in Cubase and Reason rather than having to process wavs offline (in Sound forge or whatever) and then applying them to an arrangement..

To be honest, I think that fast pcs (or macs.. whatever..) are the way forward.. the raw power involved means you can do just about anything you can think of, save it.. Come back to it.. change it.. whatever.. without having lost anything.. With hardware, once you make the change, that's it.. Unless you keep backups and have a lot of time and patience..

The only arguement for having hardware as far as I can see is that the sound can very often be warmer and as far as the synths are concerned (to my ears anyway) the sounds tend to be a bit deeper than the software equivalents. .
(But then I don't have a lot of hardware so what do I know!?! ;0)  )

As far as small studios go though, I'm very very happy with my setup.. (although I have to admit I don't have a warranty card for most of my software).. which is :

Athlon 2200 XP
RME hammerfall DSP Multiface (8 analogue in/ 8 out.. PLus digi connections)..
2 big 19 " monitors side by side for a bigger desktop..
Reason2
Cubase SX
Loads of plugins and VSTi's..

This allows me to sample from any source at very high quality.. Load the sample straight into any number of different types of sampler and then twist it all up very, very quickly..

I suppose it's about time as much as anything else.. If I had the time to do things in hardware then maybe I would.. But I don't!!

Anyway, hope this helps...

Nick..

p.s. can't comment on the PC vs Mac debate.. Other than to say that I'm happy with my pc but I have a degree in computer science!! Most people I know are buying G4s at the moment..

Contentious Issues....f'real

I've used and liked having a hardware based studio for about 3yrs - Pc, mixer, yamaha sampler, supernova synth, FX, and compressors, but I was wondering how much things would change for the better if i sold the lot and bought a G4 Mac or superfast Athlon PC. I sometimes get fed up with the clutter and if i moved house etc, it would be the perfect studio.

I would try to base it around a USB/Firewire audio/Midi interface for the controller keyboard and sampling audio from vinyl /recording to DAT etc and Logic Audio (although not available for PC anymore) and soft synths, samplers for sound creation and sequencing.... I could record the tunes digitally to DAT and return them into the computer for mastering using T Racks or Cool Edit etc and be ready for the CDRW, just using a computer and my amp and studio monitors.

Would it be better just to use Reason?

I wondered if anyone else has done this and if they thought it was worth it?

I would have weigh off the more temperamental nature of a computer based system, but then depending how it was built it could be a good move.

Any ideas for the ultimate small scale studio?

Cheers

Dan
