Every musical/artistic culture comes up with its own "mythology" of sorts, complete with archetypes such as the ever-keeping -it- real- hip hop hoodrat or the constantly- in- anguish numetal rocker.  Being that drum n bass has some wierd ass cross- cultural roots,Im not surprised a generic label like "renegade" is in usage, although I also think it miiiggghht have it's origins in the image of the ever-at-odds-with-the-law ragga/dub thing (or "ting", sorry), which ended up blending nicely with the ever-at-odds-with-the-the-law raver thing.  With drum n bass still being the electronic music most willing to take risks, dnb producers like to paint the image of themsleves as musical "renegades" as well.  Sorry for pulling the curtain away from the fantasy (In this age of "collective individuality" noone likes to learn they are just following cultural trends), but hey, you were crazy enough to ask.
