a big part of fruity's charm is that it is simple, but that also means
that it is very limited. i constantly run into problems with the fact
that there are only 16 effects busses and only 4 aux sends, i could
easily use up 3 of the aux sends on just my basses alone.
yes, but this is also a by-product of how you work. With any gear, limitations force you to rethink your process and in many cases spur you towards insipration.
while often true, just as often limitations are just that: limiting :)
For example, it sounds to me like you are "designing" sounds on the fly using fruitys plugins and effects (3 sends on basses!!??).dude, i'm just getting started with my basses, i imagine in a year or two i'll be using 6 efx chains on my basses ;) here is an example of how i would *like* to send a bass through some chains (this is how i would do it in logic, i'm assuming cubase has the same level of routing control) :
a. start with a basic bass tone, be it vst, or a sample, or whatever, send to aux bus 1 and 2
b. on aux 1 put a massive overdrive and a highpass
c. on aux 2 put a northpole like reactive filter
d. run all the outs of the other auxs into bus 3
e. on bus 3 put a hipass, echo, then a reverb
f. assign all the filter's to my outboard midi slider bay, hit record and tweak the bass to my hearts content :)
now that leaves me only 1 aux to use for everything else... you could probably eliminate one of those busses by bouncing some tracks on doing some static editing, but considering that i want to have effects chains with this level of depth on every instrument i have playing in a song, the bus routing in fruity has a long way to go for me. fruity is just plain stifling me right now. the way they designed their bus routing system is easy to use, but very limiting. take a look at logic to see how endless the possibilities can be... i only wish that the interface to logic didnt smoke huge rocks of crack :)
Id recommend this as a supplement to using raw samples, not a primary means of getting sounds If you need to do this, a solution would be to resample your sounds by exporting to wav and importing them back to free those FX tracks. A better approach however might be to do sound design through other means (like an outboard synth, sampler, or softsynth) and import into Fruity sounds that are "polished" somewhat, rather than taxing your CPU/FX tracks making sounds out of the plugins.i use an extrmemely wide variety of static manipulation of the source waves, vst's and design by sending raw samples through complex chains like i've described. i've used systems that were entirely static, and i never want to go back, if i can't play my song live i'm just not happy :)
Of course this would take a reshift in your style of workflow. Fruity is FAAR from perfect ( your right about the gate time of samples- a pain) , but I wouldbnt begrudge it things like number of effects, since 16 plus 4 sends is plenty if you know how to work with it.16/4 is not enough, period. it will stop you from doing some things you might want to do, there is really no way around it these limitations, not even setting up a separate .flp for each instrument in the track would cut it, and who would want to do that anyhow :) i was incredably excited when fruity added the aux busses and upped the effects sends from 8 to 16, i just wish they would remove arbitrary limitations, because this really is my last major gripe with fruity, i've got lots of other small ones, but every sequencer sucks in many ways ;)
i love oldskool 'ardcore, but they were just not able to achieve the levels of complexity and abstraction in their sound design with their old gear. while it would be a fun experiment to lock myself in a cabin in the woods with a minidisk, an 808 and a 303, for my real work i'll stick with the flexable dynamic systems that pc's were meant to provide :)Keep in mind early records were made with much less. :)
if i wasnt so busy/lazy i'd be learning cubase instead of typing this though :)
