If you have the cash, and can find one, the ultimate mixer would be a
mid-format, fully automated, all analog board.

A year from now, everything digital will be 192/32, and anything running at
a lower bit rate will be obsolete. Since only Protools HD can do this right
now, and Protools is the biggest pile of shit ever sold, you are better off
getting an automated analog board, and placing your computer I/O on the
inserts, so you can use the mic pre's of the board, but mix down using the
board's eq.

I've also heard more than one engineer say that had a/b'd their DAW's
internal mixing to that provided by an outboard, analog mixer, and that they
greatly prefered the analog mix. Counterintuitively, there seems to be some
information that is being lost during your pc's internal mixing.

I've seen some 48 channel boards, but they were configured for live theatre,
and not suitable for studio use. Perhaps Neve, or SSL have some older,
smaller used one on their site?

The DB8 is stuck in 44.1k land. It's >already< obsolete. That's why
everywhere is blowing them out. Perhaps the new Yamaha mLan mixer. It looks
pretty exciting, though I can't stand the sound of the 01/02/03 series - I
even prefer mackie pres (!)

YMMV, just my 2 cents, etc, blahblah...
