I'd recommend it.  It's nice to have tactile control
when you're programming softsynths and the like, but not strictly essential.
They also work very well with Reason 2.

But unless you plan on picking up the Mbox ($450 including Pro Tools LE 6.0)
you should take a look at Logic 6 or Cubase SX.  Pro Tools FREE is available
but you're limited to 8 tracks of audio.
