I'd
probably look at a Yamaha CSx series synth (1,2 or the 6 if you can afford it)
or have you looked at the Roland JP8000/Yamaha AN1X (quality analogues that
are now quite cheap)- second hand these synths can't be more than $3-400
nowadays and would be far more useable, with much better sounds and
synthesis.
You
won't need a preamp for their outputs and just hook up the midi cables to a
midiman via your PC/Mac
Dan
I've been lurking for a while now and I have a question
regarding a synth purchase.
I've
been producing for about two years now. Most of my music is more
dnb-influenced than dnb proper, lots of chopped samples in a dj
premier/rjd2/prefuse 73 style. I am interested in doing more
abstract/ambient/'intelligent' jungle stuff now, though, and this requires
that I get nice with a synthesizer. I've fucked with all sorts of soft
synths and found them to be very uninspiring--kind of like writing a letter
through a keyhole, not very spontaneous. (...Apart from the Junglist,
nice VST.) Therefore, I think it's time to invest in a synth.
I do not have the resources for a
proper analog modeler like a virus or even a micro q. Furthermore, I
don't think I am strong enough with synths to get the most out of one.
So I'm thinking of getting an older, more limited analog to get a better
footing. This brings me to my
question: the music director for a church (lol) in town wants to sell me his
Roland JX-8P. I went over and played with it. It seems kick-ass
(apart from the very 1986 presets). The lack of knobs is a problem,
though. A few questions: Can a
midiman do everything that the JX-8P's external controller unit can? (He
doesn't have the controller, so if a midiman won't suffice, I'd have to buy it
off ebay). I've been wanting to get one
anyway. Would a proper keyboard amp be
necessary as well, or could I just put it through a mixer for recording into
the computer? What would a fair price
be for this synth? He's asking for $350 American,
which after browsing ebay seems a bit ridiculous. I'd
like to know what a fair price would be before I begin the haggling
process. Most importantly, is this
synth even worth my time at all? Has anyone used one? It does not
exactly seem to be one of those classic synths that people really remember; is
there a reason for this? If it sucks, could anyone recommend a better
choice? Thanks for your time and
expertise...I've heard some pretty good work posted to this list recently so I
respect your opinions.
