Personally I've got a lot of respect for anyone that sets out to creat everything from scratch, and keep it all fresh. The problem I found with taking this approach for several years, is that I got very little music done. I spent so much time making sounds, and having banks of stuff that I guess was quite average in the end. Then there was a point where really needed a certain sound. To be honest though, I've found that there's only a small portion on sample CD's that I find usefull. If you're happy with the results you're getting, cool, keep on working that way. If you're missing something, then look for a solution. For me I got a couple of hardware units (mainly a Waldorf synth that nicely sorted out b lines), but it's whatever works for you....
