I'm not that familiar with fruity. Are you talking about a 64 bar measure (at 180 or whatever bpm), so you've got effectively 8 variations in a row? That sounds a little longer than it needs to be, but certainly nothing wrong with that. As for getting the sounds right, if it sounds good for you that's fine. I've tried many different ways of trying to make things sound natural that have failed. Using a program to automatically splice up the beats can sound good, but generally you'll find a fair bit sounds unnatural, or stands out too much when you use it independently. The only other thing is playing with velocity if you're adding beats to an existing loop i,e pulling some of the ghost/extra notes down in velocity.
