you definitely need to start using the playlist editor. i used your approach for a while too when i first started using fruity, trust me, its much easier using the playlist.

When i create a tune in fruity loops i don't use the playlist sequencer so when i play my track in 'loop mode' what u see on screen is whats actually in the tune. doin it this way i find means adding lots of channels and eventually the program becomes so crackly i can't work, at the risk of answering my own question would it be better to use the playlist thingy and keep 'pattern screens' to a minimum of a few things.
