not sure what you mean by using other instruments as hi hats... and you
can't construct an amen, because an amen is a SPECIFIC break, not a specific
kind of arrangement... anything of the latter type is an imitation... for
instance teebee does that with all sorts of things - in several of his
tracks you can hear *his take* on an amen, or a reece patch, etc... it'll
help you come to terms with drum programming. buuuuuut it's not an amen.

when i put together drums for my tracks they consist of any or all of the
following: one to three kick drums, two to three snares to layer and ghost,
several different hats (closed, open, etc.), a ride cymbal, a crash cymbal,
a reverse crash cymbal, bongos, congas, and other breaks for layering.

start out with your kicks and snares first... and build in the other drum
parts around it. but if you're really dead-set on a realistic sound you
might as well just use breaks... and then use additional drum sounds to beef
them up (i.e. layer a kick if the break's kick is kinda weak, etc.)

learn how to use recycle. hehe.
