Hi Edward, In your place I'd stick with what I am comfortable with and let the packages figure out how to get things into distributions, especially after jaromils message.
But if you decide to go for a C++ frontend, then you might want to consider Qt. It is probably a more beginner friendly option: It has good documentation and works great with the Qt Creator IDE -- which also works great for non-Qt C++ and C projects. So even for GTK projects it is a decent IDE, even though you will need to run the UI designer as a separate application.
