Another possibility: Substitute LXDE for XFCE. Long before systemd, I
discovered that XFCE was kind of unstable and not real trustworthy,
whereas LXDE is quite the opposite. The only XFCE advantage over LXDE I
ever found was drawers and stuff, but installing dmenu should render
that LXDE disadvantage moot.

And LXDE uses a lot less RAM. Over the years Xfce has gotten a little
porky.
