After successfully upgrading to Beowulf, and after carefully evaluating all the opinions and considerations received (thanks to everyone), I did some experiments... and finally migrated from MATE to LXDE. I am really very happy with the result. I have all the applications and features I need; there are far fewer dependencies; the use of system memory is less; the system is stable and much more responsive; the performance with qemu-kvm virtualization is excellent... System configuration and customization turned out to be less difficult and demanding than I thought. In short, a great general improvement. I still have some doubts if LXQt could be a better choice.
