Mousepad? 
We haven't use one since we purchased new custom computer desks for the
SOHO. The 'desk' is actually a slab of kitchen bench top covered
with a nice looking laminex(?) called yellow pepper or some such.

Works great with all optical mice and the only maintennce is an
occassional brush out of fluff in the optic and a desk wipe down with a
basic cleaner.

After 30+ years, the only problem is a growing worn patch from sliding
my wrist around.
