It seems to me that the realistic issue is not that the TLD will break, but that the registry or registrar will suspend you. Spreading that risk across multiple registries and registrars seems like a good idea, with a side effect that you use different TLDs. That's probably true, and it's not a new observation since djbdns defaulted to in-domain NS in 1998. But when I look at zone files, only a small fraction of domains have in-domain NS. Tthey are more work to set up than just pointing the NS at your registrar's or DNS operator's NS.
