If the IETF says “deidentified DNS logs are basically anonymous” vs. 
“deidentified DNS logs are basically PII”, I believe that makes a big 
difference in the world.  Expert practitioners might already understand the 
nuance here, but our audience is broader than that.

But neither is consistently true. If there's PII in the underlying data, then there is a risk (I honestly don't know how much) of recovering that. If it's a bunch of machine tools and themocouples, there isn't.
