Yes, but (one of the) important improvements here is standards-based
interoperability. Responsible operation of large-scale infrastructure requires
code diversity. Implementation of a desirable optimization like this across a
responsibly-operated large-scale infrastructure requires standards-based
interoperability. It would not be better to have each implementation
independently arrive at a non-interoperable outcome.
