I was able to work-around the said behavior with the following: "CompizConfig Settings Manager" and under the "General Options" on the "Focus & Raise Behavior" tab: Focus Prevention Windows = "!(class=Pidgin)"
This will have the side effect of the pidgin conversation windows stealing focus when new conversations arrive depending on your settings in Pidgin.
